The Executive Director for Northern Patriots in Research and Advocacy (NORPRA), Bismarck Adongo Ayorogo has stated that no significant construction work has been carried out at the Pwalugu Multipurpose Dam site.

Northern Patriots in Research and Advocacy (NORPRA) exists to work for poverty reduction in northern Ghana through advocacy for quality education, good governance, environmental sustainability, and civic responsibility.

According to the director, checks made indicate that consultations with community members and the relocation of the affected settlers have contributed to the delay of the start of the project.

He said, “…from November up till now, we have been to the site and no significant construction work is been carried out. What we heard was that, they are doing consultations with the community members, certain houses will have to be resettled, so you need to talk to people, you need to look at compensation issues and all that.”

When completed, the one billion Dollar ($1bn) multipurpose dam will address three main issues; these are irrigation, hydro-power generation, and flood control.

The project was expected to be completed in about four years and two months after sod was cut in November 2019.

However, Bismarck Adongo is worried that the timeline to the completion of the project may not be met following the slow pace at which work is ongoing at the site.

He said, “… we the beneficiaries of government projects shouldn’t be worried about where the money is coming from but be matching government to be committed to the timelines that have been announced to us and we will hold them accountable.”
