An Economist, Michael Adongo has described as half-truth the 2021 State of the Nation Address delivered in parliament by President Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo on Tuesday, 9th March 2021 in accordance with article 67 of the constitution of Ghana.

According to Michael Adongo, the presentation was not a true reflection of the current state of the country as presented. He said parliament should come out with a framework to actually streamline and scrutinize what has been presented to Ghanaians as the state of the country.

Speaking to the job losses during COVID-19 partial lockdown on Daybreak Upper East on A1 Radio, he said “…we have a huge informal sector where we do not actually attempt to collect data, or we don’t actually collect the data well. For the president to talk about less than a million people, when we are talking about tens of millions of people who have lost their jobs. When we are talking about tens of millions of people who have suffered massive wage deductions to the point that some now earn below minimum wage”.

“…so if the president decided to first of all look at what data they are able to collect instead of trying to use a common-sense approach to better estimate the reality in the country is a problem.” He added.

Ghana’s economy lost 42,000 jobs in the second quarter of 2020 during the country’s Coronavirus lockdown, according to President Akufo-Addo in his state of the nation address on Tuesday.

However, Michael Adongo believes this is not a true reflection of the number of Ghanaians who suffered job losses, especially in the informal sector.
