Since August 1996, the Gbeogo School for the Deaf has been increasing its pupils’ enrollment, yet it lacks the necessary materials for effective teaching and learning.

The school located in the Talensi District in the Upper East Region has over 320 pupils from the beginning of this academic year and very likely to get more pupils coming in due to the unique role it plays in education in the region.

The school however continues to struggle for basic amenities such as water, accommodation, and vehicle.

Speaking in an interview with A1 Radio, the headmaster of the school, Felix Neetege noted that the school has classes from Kindergarten to Junior High School all of which record increases in enrollment each year.

“Since the school was established, it has been increasing its enrollment up to date. The school started with 10 students but as I speak we have a total number of 329 pupils. So, for patronage, parents bring their children.”

Touching on the challenges of the school, the headmaster stated that water and money to cater for the electricity bills were the main concern of the school.

“The school even though has received some facelift, water and money to always pay for our electricity bills are our biggest problem. It is always challenging when we run out of electricity. Another challenge is lack of a vehicle to take the children to the hospital when they fall sick and also the absence of a resident nurse.”

He stressed that, “…we wish government or stakeholders in education or health can help us with a sickbay. This will help us to properly take care of the children whenever they feel sick.”

Mr. Neetege revealed this to A1 Radio when AquaBolg Enterprise, producer of AquaBolg Mineral water in the Bolgatanga Municipality visited the school to donate some items to the pupils.

The items donated included sanitary pads, soaps, toothpaste, and bags of water.

The Proprietor of AquaBolg Enterprise, Humul Khrusum Tahiru however noted that the initiative forms part of the business’s corporate social responsibility of giving back to society.
