Center for Social Mobilization and Sustainable Development (CENSODEV) a Non-governmental organizations based in the Upper East region, has launched a project known as Women Voices and Leadership project at Navrongo, in the Kassena Nankana Municipality of the Upper-East Region. It is under the theme, “Empowering women and girls for leadership positions to champion local governance and community development.”

This project seeks to empower girls and women to take up leadership positions in their various communities in order to champion developmental agenda in the Upper East region.

According to the Executive Director of Center for Social Mobilization and Sustainable Development, Brainmah Sanjage, women population in the world outweighs the population of men, yet women are unable to occupy leadership positions like men. It was, for this reason, the Center for Social Mobilization and Sustainable Development with support from Plan Ghana embarked on this project to assist women in the region to realize their leadership potentials.

“We are looking at how we can empower women to take up leadership positions, and then champion community development. We are all aware that in the population of the world, women are about 52% of the world population. If you come to the district level and regional level is the same thing, but when it comes to leadership positions, I don’t know why our women folks are unable to work their way. Because It’s about numbers, and I know that there’s a lot of interventions all over the years talking about how to empower women to take up leadership positions and all those things, but it’s not working” Mr. Sanjage said.

Mr. Sanjage stressed that there is always agitation among women when it comes to competition for leadership positions, he said the Center for Social Mobilization and Sustainable Development (CENSODEV) is to assist women and girls to start leadership roles at the unit committee level in their various communities, hence local government system begins it developmental agenda at the unit committee level.

The project will last for six months and five districts are said to benefit this project which includes Kassena Nankana Municipal, Kassena Nankana West District, Builsa South, Builsa North Municipal, and Bongo District.

The guest speaker of the event Mrs. Felicia Ajongba, who is the Kassena Nankana Municipal Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), called on authorities to ensure gender equality among Ghanaians citizenry.

According to her, the inequality among gender in the Country is a violation of human rights, and it is also a contributory factor of low development in the country.
