The former Upper East Regional Minister Prof Ephraim Nsoh Avea has stated that most Members of Parliament (MPs) go to Parliament to make money and not really for the interest of the people.

Prof Avea, who was speaking in an interview on Day Break Upper East show on A1 Radio said the ‘Thank you’ tours undertaken by most MPs is not because they are genuinely working but they want to gain the favour of the people and prepare the ground for the next election.

The former regional minister under the erstwhile John Mahama, National Democratic Congress (NDC) government said community setups are a contributory factor to why MPs undertake tours the way they do because of the monetization of the political space as community members and groups expect their MPs to pay for school fees, pay for the drinks at a forum and make a lot of giveaways when they come to visit.

Prof Avea, said he believes most MPs are not able to engage their constituents enough to explain their work in parliament to them because of some of the monetary commitment they expect them to make when they visit so if they do not have such monies they would not want to visit.

Prof Avea urged the general public to help their MPs turn such forums to its proper purpose of accounting and explaining the process of governance to the grassroots.
