Former Member of Parliament for Tamale Central Constituency Inusah Fuseini is questioning the methods the country would be deploying to fighting ‘galamsey’ as the country is currently housing over 700,000 Chinese nationals.

According to Mr Fuseini, majority of these Chinese are deeply involved in illegal mining activities across the country without proper documents.

Mr Fuseini who spoke exclusively on Daybreak Upper East show on A1 Radio however noted that it would be hard for the country to completely erase ‘galamsey’ activities without proper steps in place to curb who comes in the country and what they do.

He said “Ghana is believed to be housing the largest Chinese nationals in the whole of West Africa and majority of these people are either into the galamsey act or something that goes beyond galamsey. So, for us to win the fight against galamsey, then proper measures ought to be put in place. We have to take who comes and leaves seriously.”

The former lawmaker further stated that though the current government under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has created a scene of fighting ‘galamsey’ he doubted if it can chalk the success that Ghanaians are expecting.

He explained the government ought to equip the various immigration offices with modern devices to keep check on who comes in and what they are doing and also crack the whip on those who are found guilty of ‘galamsey’ activities are all steps that the president and his ministers need to take seriously.

Meanwhile, the government through the Minister of Land and Natural Resources, Abu Jinapor has reported that 200 additional military men have been deployed to help curb the practices of illegal mining.
