Small Scale Miners have expressed their worry about the burning of excavators by soldiers of the operation Halt team.

The Small Scale Miners Association says their members are victims of the burning of seized excavators even though they have engaged authorities about the situation which have not yielded positive results from the soldiers on the ground.

According to the Secretary of Ashanti Regional Association of Small Scale Miners, Adu Gyamfi, about 14 excavators belonging to their members have been destroyed by soldiers though they are undertaking an audit to know the worth of properties that is destroyed in total.

Mr. Gyamfi who was speaking in an interview on Day Break Upper East show on A1 Radio said, the situation has forced its members to halt work and leave their mining site due to the insistent burning of excavators without regard to who is legitimately working which is causing fear among their members.

He said some of the challenges experienced in clearing illegal miners from the site are because the mining sector needs reforms.

Mr. Gyamfi said scale mining should be monitored and supervised at the local level which is the best way to check to ensure that the sector is sanitized.
