Chief Director at the Upper East Regional Coordinating Council, Alhaji Mahamadu Azonko has called on Ghanaians to do self introspection to revamp the country’s economy.

According to him, majority of Ghanaians focus on theoretical-based education to the extent of competing for Master’s certificates to the neglect of common knowledge for growth.

The situation he said, has caused the country’s economy to continue sinking to the level that the country is now depending heavily on common tomatoes from neighboring Burkina Faso.

He said “Ghana used to be head of the production of tomatoes. The machines, skills, and knowledge of how tomatoes farming is; majority of these farmers from Burkina Faso learned it from our local farmers. How shameful, it sometimes sound when we hear that Ghana imports tomatoes from Burkina?”

Alhaji Azonko, made the comments in his office on Wednesday 27, May 2021 when the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Forestry Commission paid a working visit to the region ahead of the Green Ghana project.

He stressed that, if care is not taken the country could soon depend on pepper and other foodstuffs for its citizens.

He asked “…for how long we will begin thinking of how to use our common knowledge to make this country great. The problem is not with those who do not go to school. Those who have been to the four corners of the classroom are the real problem. The thing is they know what is right for the country but they will not do it.”

Alhaji Azonko added, how people ‘scramble’ for master’s certificates in the country if they could do the same with their common knowledge in the area of agriculture the country would no longer be importing tomatoes and other foodstuffs from neighboring countries.

He, however, called on Ghanaians to prioritize the agricultural sector in the country as well as focus on protecting the forest cover for a greener Ghana.
