Human Rights lawyer, Inusah Fuseini has advised parents not to surrender their parental responsibility and control over their wards to school authorities.

Lawyer Fuseini, believes the increasing number of teenage pregnancies in Senior High Schools is because many parents seem to be happy to have their children away, in boarding schools where teachers and school authorities have oversight responsibility over the children.

The former Member of Parliament for Tamale Central Constituency who was speaking in an interview on Day Break Upper East show on A1Radio said, the right to education is absolute but there must be a fine balance between the right to education and discipline.

He said currently the educational system we operate in the country does not give complete control over these children to teachers and school authority so it will be difficult for the school system correct instances that could lead to teenage pregnancies.

He said nations like Togo, Burkina Faso and even the United States of America do not operate the boarding school system, they allow children to stay at home and go to school and this allows parents to monitor their wards properly which go a long way to maintain discipline which leads to less teenage pregnancies cases.

Recent reports in the media suggests that there is an increasing number of teenage pregnancies among students of SHS in the Upper East Region.
