A lecturer at the Bolgatanga Technical University, Donatus Nyaaba on Thursday miraculously escaped death in a near-fatal accident on the Bolgatanga-Navrongo Highway in the Upper East Region.

According to the lecturer, a front tire of the car with registration number UE 154-11 burst and as a result, he lost control while driving home with children whom he picked from school.

As a result, Mr. Nyaaba veered off the road and crashed into a neem tree on the shoulders of the road, adjacent the Volta River Authority (VRA) building in the Bolgatanga Municipality.

Mr. Nyaaba who had stains of blood on his smock said he was driving in the outer lane when the accident happened.

“There was no way I could control the car because of the tire bust. I did all I could but…”

The lecturer who doubles as the Regional Director of Elections for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) together with the children were rushed to the regional hospital to be examined.

The Toyota saloon car which hit the tree was severely damaged with the windscreen smashed but the lecturer escaped death, probably due to the airbag that was blown out and shielded him and the children.

As at the time the accident occurred at about 3:30pm, no paramedics from the National Ambulance Service were present to give first aid treatment nor were the police present to control traffic on the road as a result of the incident.
