GSS cautions ‘aggrieved’ communities not to allow boundary, naming issues to prevent them from partaking in 2021 PHC

Ghana Statistical Service has called on communities that are threatening not to participate in the ongoing 2021 Population and Housing exercise to reconsider their decisions for their good.

According to the service, it will be a disservice for any community that does not partake in the exercise as their data will not be captured for any development that might come to the area.

Head of Census Publicity, Education and Advocacy at the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS), Francis Nyarkoh Larbi, commented on Daybreak Upper East Show on A1 Radio regarding some communities in the Upper East Region are boycotting the exercise.

One of the communities in the Kassena-Nankana West District in the Upper East Region, Kandiga has over the week served notices of its unwillingness to participate in the exercise reasons that there have been some irregularities in the demarcation and description of the area.

Mr Nyarkoh noted that such a decision not to participate in the exercise will rather do a disservice to members and not his outfit.

“It is rather unfortunate that some communities are threatening not to participate in the exercise. Remember it takes us ten years before we are carrying out this exercise. And we are doing this to help governments and organizations always have the right data that can help them distribute resources evenly. So, if you are saying that you are not taking part then, they will be relying on the old data to do that and you can imagine how disadvantage that will be to you or the community.

All that I’m saying is that, yes boundaries issues will crop up but you have to participate in the exercise and afterwards, such cases can be resolved. So, I will appeal to such communities to exercise patience and partake in the exercise.”

The Publicity Officer added that the public should not see the exercise as a burden or a certain government’s initiative rather a way that will help champion the growth of the country.

He, however, called on the public to see enumerators and field officers as their brothers and sisters and assist them with the necessary information required for the success of the exercise.

  1. The people of Kandiga are peace loving people and need development in the area but GSS is not acting professionally. This is because there have been other statistics or data taken by other private and government agencies but these irregularities never existed even Electoral Commission of Ghana in the 2020 elections used Atosale/ Azaasi and Akunkongu/ Abempingo not the alien name Akuruku-daboo.GSS is causing a confusion.
