Member of the communication team of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Bongo Constituency of the Upper East Region Alfred Awuni has said, the president’s comment that people entering the teaching profession are not expected to become millionaires is demotivational.

Mr Awuni was speaking in a panel discussion on Day Break Upper East show on A1 Radio said such comments by high profile personalities like the president is demotivational and does not encourage teachers in the classroom to give off their best.

“We have teachers in this country who are doing very well, you don’t have to be very rich to be content with what you have, it is only those who amass wealth that belong to the general public expect to enter government sector and become millionaires” he said.

He argues that the president should have made the comment a general comment rather than specifically referring to those in the teaching field which could weaken the morale of teachers.

Mr Awuni called on President Nana Akufo Addo to apologize to teachers over the comment because simply saying one can not become a millionaire for choosing the teaching profession is “obnoxious” and that teachers are not happy with the president over comment.

But in a sharp rebuttal the Upper East Coordinator of the Nation Builders Corps (NABCO), Khan Jambeidu urged the general public to disregard the comments of the NDC communicator which he describes as mere politicking.

Mr Jambeidu said teachers are actually very happy under Nana Addo government than the erstwhile John Mahama government who portrayed a “dead goat syndrome” when teachers were demanding for their salary arrears to be paid.

He added that teachers at the secondary school level are actually very happy with the president for introducing new allowances that goes to put more money in their pockets.
