Calm returns to Sabon Gari after stray bullet kills one person

Calm has returned to Sabon Gari a suburb of Bawku in the Upper East Region after one person lost his life and another sustaining gunshot wound in an unfortunate situation.

The two persons Zulka Salam age 16 a student was hit by a stray bullet in the lower abdomen and Mohammed Mahmood a ‘Mahama Cando rider’ age 26 was hit by a stray bullet in the head and was rushed to the Bawku Presbyterian hospital unconscious who later died.

Meanwhile Zulka has been treated and discharged from the hospital.

Information available to A1Radioonline.com indicates that the two person are only victims of the unfortunate situation and not related to the land dispute.

Confirming the unfortunate situation to A1Radioonline.com, the Upper East Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Police Service, ASP David Fianko-Okyere said the two are victims of a land dispute between two groups of individuals and is not in anyway related to the long standing conflict in the area.

According to the police PRO, at about 2:00 pm on Thursday July 29, 2021 an individuals had come to the Bawku Police Station to report that he was developing their land when some other individuals came claiming ownership of the land.

He said shortly afterwards another individuals came to the station to report a similar situation, where police had advised the individuals to remain calm while the issue is handled amicably.

ASP Fianko-Okyere said later police receive a call that there were gunshots and when police arrived at the scene where they met a crowd of people, police were inform that, indeed there was a shooting incident there and two victims have been rushed to the Bawku Presbyterian Hospital.

A follow up to hospital showed that two young individuals sustained gunshot wounds where one was treated and discharged but the other lost his life, he added.

He urged the public to volunteer information to the police that will lead to the arrest of the person or persons that fired the gunshots.

ASP Fianko-Okyere cautioned the public to desist from relating the shooting incident to the long standing conflict in the area
