India High Commissioner visits Upper East Region for the first time

The High Commissioner of India, His Excellency, Sugandh Rajaram who arrived in the country in January 2020 is in the Upper East Region for the first time for an official visit. The High Commissioner who arrived in Bolgatanga on Sunday night met the media for a brief interaction.

Mr. Rajaram is expected to stay in the region for a week and he will interact with political and traditional authorities, the business community and visit areas such as the Kofi Annan ICT center in Bolgatanga.

Speaking to the media, the High Commissioner said the purpose of the visit is to explore the possibilities to facilitate support to interested Indian businesses for investments into the region.

“What I am expecting from the business community and for that matter, all the stakeholders is to come out with concrete ideas for the corporation with the India government”, he said.

The High Commissioner stated that the government of India has a long relationship with Ghana and because of that, the government of India continued to supply Ghana with 900 million products including medical consumers despite the devastating effects of the Coronavirus pandemic on the Indian production industry.

Speaking on capacity, Mr. Rajaram said the people of India are not interested in exploiting Ghanaians and Africa as a whole that was why the Indian government continue to offer Ghanaians capacity building trainings through scholarship opportunities for the teaming youth to harness their potentials.

According to H.E Sugandh Rajaram in the era of the pandemic, the government of India through a leading hospital in India, Apollo Hospitals which has state-of-the-art facilities is providing advanced and quality medical training for the youth through telemedicine education.

“Every year, we take 150 officials from Ghana to India to teach them on various aspects such as IT, accountancy, and many areas. In the last ten years, more than 3,600 Ghanaians have been trained in various programs. We have also launched Telemedicine which young people including Ghanaians can take advantage of this technology to study online with professionals from India. I always make it a point to visit some regional hospitals and I am trying to see if one or two doctors from these hospitals can be sent to India for upgrading of their skills. This year we are offering scholarships to five hospitals in Ghana for doctors to go to India for an upgrade.”

The High Commissioner stated that plans are underway to establish some Indian drug manufacturing companies in Ghana to help improve health delivery in the country.

H.E Sugandh Rajaram indicated that his government will continue to support the media in capacity building and plans are ongoing to diversify the award of scholarships in Ghana which will allow at least one person from all the 16 regions of the country to benefit in each year.

While pledging to reconnect some individuals who had the opportunity to study in India, Mr. Rajaram urged the alumnis to identify some opportunities in the Upper East Region towards the establishment of Indian businesses which could help in the growth of the Ghanaian economy. 

The High Commissioner of India, His Excellency, Sugandh Rajaram who is in the Upper East Region for a week, will also visit the regional hospital in Bolgatanga, the Bolgatanga Technical University, Navrongo Health Research Center, and some irrigational sites in the region.
