Repair damage roads in Wa as a matter of urgency – Pres directs roads minister

The President Nana Akufo Addo has directed the Ministry of Roads and Highways to as a matter of urgency, repair all portions of the Wa-Nadowli-Nandom highway and all other feeder roads that were washed off by the torrential roads in the Upper West Region on Friday, 13th August.

The Minister of Roads and Highway, Kwesi Amoako Attah said government considers the situation in the Upper West Region a national issue.

He said resources shall be marshalled and directed at fixing the damage caused to the roads on time.

This he said will restore all socio-economic activities.

The Minister said this when he met with the media in Wa after inspecting the floods that have caused extensive damage to roads in the Region.

“The President has given that strong instruction to me [Roads and Highway Minister] that we restore the roads as quickly as practicable. We do not want any part of the country to be cut off.”

“We are going to treat it under emergency situation. I am told that this is intensity of rain hasn’t been recorded in more than 3 or 4 decades,” he said.

It would be recalled that five days ago, A1 Radio carried reports that parts of the Upper West Region were inundated with floods following several hours of rains.

Portions of the Wa-Nadowli-Lawra-Hamile highway were washed off.

Other feeder roads including Sombo-Daffiama have also been washed off leaving passengers and drivers stranded.

The Roads and Highway minister accompanied by the Regional Minister Dr Hafiz Bin Salih, the MP for Sissala East Hamidu Chinnia and the Regional Director of NADMO Mustapha Ahmed toured the affected districts with a helicopter to assess the situation.

Places toured were Nadowli, Daffiama-Bussie-Issa, Lawra, Wa East and Sissala East.

Briefing the media after the tour the Sector Minister Mr Amoako Atta assured the people of the region that the roads will be fixed as soon as possible.

The minister also spoke about measures to be adopted to protect the roads from suffering similar fate in future.

Mr Amoako Atta also called on the overload of the Waala Traditional area Naa Fuseini Seidu Pelpuo and assured him that the roads will be fixed without delay.
