Scores of passengers and vehicles are stranded behind the Navariwie bridge in the Sissala East Municipality after the area experienced more than 6 hours of heavy rains.

Navariwie, a farming community, is about 15 kilometres from Tumu, capital of the Sissala East Municipality.

Locals from the Navariwie community say it could take three days before the water recedes.

They recalled that a similar situation happened in 2019 when the then British High Commissioner to Ghana, Ian Walker during a scheduled bicycle tour was delayed due to heavy rains that covered parts of the road and bridge.

Farmers from Tumu and other communities are unable to say when it might be safe for them to return.

One of the affected commuters, Madam Safia Jacob who was travelling from Bolga through Tumu to Wa was forced to go back to Bolga after waiting several hours.

Other commuters who spoke to the media suggested that they “will sleep at Navariwie till the water level recedes hopefully tomorrow.

‘I will sleep here because I cannot go back, I need to go home at all cost,” another stranded person said.

The residents of the community say several vehicles returned to Bolga whilst others travelled back to go through Chuchuliga -Sandema through Fumbisi to Issa then Wa whilst others contemplate going through Tamale to Wa stretch.
