Soe-Yipaala residents struggle with poor roads, water, and power challenges

The Soe-Yipaala Electoral Area in the Upper East Region is grappling with significant infrastructure deficits, despite being categorized as part of an urban municipality. The community is currently facing a range of challenges, including unreliable access to water, an unstable electricity supply due to low voltage, and poor road networks. This is according to the assembly member, Dr. Justice Aduko.

“Access to water is a challenge. Lately, we are experiencing low power voltage, and we have road network challenges.”

Speaking in an interview on A1 Radio, the Soe-Yipaala assembly member noted that residents and new settlers in the area have been particularly affected by the deteriorating road conditions. He explained that the situation has made access to residential areas increasingly difficult, especially for individuals who have invested in property and relocated to the area due to its peaceful environment.

He emphasized that the problem usually worsens during the rainy season, when smallholder and peasant farmers utilize every available space for farming. This practice sometimes leads to tensions between farmers and property owners, especially when farmland overlaps with access routes to residential properties.

“When the rain starts and farming begins, it becomes worse. Day in and day out, you see smallholder or peasant farmers having confrontations with people who have bought land and want to settle. They farm on any space they find, and when they do that, people have problems accessing roads.”

Dr. Aduko highlighted that efforts are currently underway to address the situation, noting that he has formally communicated the community’s challenges to the Municipal Assembly. While broader interventions are expected following the confirmation of a new District Chief Executive (DCE), local authorities have already begun community sensitization initiatives to prepare residents for the planned road development.

“I’ve written to the Municipal Assembly, and they are working on it. I believe once the DCE is confirmed, steps will be taken to open up the roads. For now, we are conducting community sensitization on road opening,” he said.
