Builsa North MCE defends contractor after youth blocked road over delay in contract execution

Acting Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Builsa North in the Upper East Region, David Afoko, has refuted claims that the contractor working on the Chuchuliga- Sandema stretch of road, MyTurn Construction Company Limited, was not committed to executing the contract.

His comment follows an action by a youth group known as “Common Interest of Buluk” who blocked the Roads and Highways Minister’s convoy from entering Sandema, the Builsa North Municipal capital, as a way of registering their displeasure about the slow pace of work on the roads in the area.

The aggrieved youth accused the contractor of abandoning the road construction for several months and only returned to the site a day before the Roads and Highways Minister was visiting the area.

But speaking on A1 Radio’s Daybreak Upper East program on Friday, Mr. Afoko said “The contractor has been on site but because of the delay, people think that he is not working. The youth mobilized and did that behind us. We didn’t know that they went and blocked the road over there; but later it was resolved. I must confess to you that the contractor is on site. He is not somebody who you don’t see on site. If you come you will see the contractor doing his work.”

He explained that “Road construction is not like just paving a path. It is capital intensive; and the stretch of the road is not just in Sandema. It stretches from Builsa North to Builsa South. So, at a point where the contractor sees that he needs to move towards Builsa South, you will see him there. So if you’re not seeing him in Sandema, it does not mean he has stopped work. It’s a stretch; there are bridges and all that; so you cannot do the tarred roads and you’ll later come and be doing bridges.

Mr. Afoko further assured of government’s commitment to see to the completion of  works on the roads in the area.

He was hopeful that the contractor will complete works on the road by next year, 2022.
