The Upper East Region is increasingly becoming the mining headquarters of Northern Ghana; Minister for Lands and Natural Resources Samuel Abu Jinapor has said.

Speaking in Bolgatanga during a courtesy call on the Upper East Regional Minister, Stephen Yakubu, as part of his one-week official tour of the five northern regions, Mr. Jinapor recognised the mining prospects in the Upper East Region and reiterated Government’s resolve to ensure that all persons engaged in mining activities comply with the mining laws.

According to him, “The Upper East Region is proven to become a very robust mining hub of our country. There is granite here, sand here, there is quarrying taking place and gold in commercial quantities; and there is going to be some intense mining activities happening here in the Upper East Region both in the level of small scale mining and large scale mining. The trust of President Akufo-Addo in respect to mining in our country is that we will work to ensure that there is enhanced regulation and that the rules, the laws and all the regulations are respected from the get-go.”

The Regional Minister, in his address assured the Lands and Natural Resources Minister of his commitment to collaborate with him (Mr. Jinapor) to ensure that the plans President Akufo-Addo has for the Upper East Region are realised.

“There are many things that we will need to do together as we have started; and as you said, we are doing very well. You and I are aware of the focus given to us by His Excellency the President and I’m happy so far how things are moving. Upper East is a unique region, the resources here are enormous. You’re welcome here and I’m going to be working closely with you. I know your capacity; I know your commitment, I know that you can do it and I know you have the I-can-do spirit.” Mr. Yakubu said to the sector minister.
