The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in the Bolgatanga East District is calling on residents in the district to practice proper hygiene and sanitation in the area.

According to the commission, there is a need for residents in the district to ensure they live in a hygienic environment to avert a possible outbreak of diseases.

“Cleaning of our environment per se is something that we need to do everyday. These days we are lucky that cholera is not something that we often hear about. Having clean and potable water is also something that we are also looking at. At least now if you see the environment, we have more boreholes that we don’t drink from dams and wells again. So this indicates that there is more improvement in our sanitation aspect. When we finish drinking the sachet water, we have to dispose of it in a dustbin. So these are some of the things we try to educate the public to make sure the environment is clean. If you don’t have a dustbin but have these local buckets in the houses, just go out and drop it there. We are discouraging the burning of this refuse because burning it is also a problem so sometimes we tell them how to segregate the rubbish.”

The Bolgatanga East District Director of NCCE, Sadia Sampana who was speaking in an exclusive interview with A1 News called for concerted efforts to end child migration.

“When the children are on a long vacation, they used to travel to the down south for jobs because they think the southern sector is better than home. When we go to the communities we engage the parents and let them know that, wherever the child travels to, the parents may not know the condition in which the child is going through. So we try to encourage them not to let their children travel out of their homes.”
