The Talensi District Health Director, Estella Abazesi has hinted that the ambulance serving the people of the Talensi District of the Upper East region is out of use for close to a year now.

Speaking to journalists about health delivery in the district Mrs. Abazesi, the District Health Director noted that, the Talensi constituency ambulance under the 1-Constituency-1-Ambulance initiative has broken down for almost a year now and the situation is affecting health delivery which needs to be addressed immediately.

According to her, the Talensi District is one of the largest districts in the region, that has its communities far from each other, the reason they find it difficult to always transfer patients especially pregnant women and other emergency cases from one health center or a CHIPS compound to the district hospital or out of the district without the ambulance.

“This district ambulance has been out of use almost a year now because it was involved in an accident and it is still under repairs. The ambulance was so helpful when it was functioning for all our communities, but without it now is very difficult for us especially this rainy season to use the motor king ambulances that we have. Sometimes we do not find it easy to transport pregnant women from the health centers and the CHIPS level to the district hospital”

Mrs. Abazesi further noted that anytime the situation becomes critical where they can’t use the substitute which is the motorcycle ambulances, they always called on Bolgatanga Municipal or Bolgatanga East district ambulances to help them up by transporting the patients to the appropriate hospital.

Unfortunately, she added that health workers in the district sometimes find it difficult to get the services of the nearby ambulances because the services of those ambulances may not be available.

Mrs. Abazesi, therefore, appealed to relevant authorities to as a matter of urgency help fast-track the mechanical works of the ambulance for it to start delivering health services to the people in the district.

Meanwhile, the Upper East regional manager of the National Ambulance Services, Mr. Ali Baba in an interview with A1 Radio’s David Azure, gave the assurance that the ambulance for the Talensi district will be back on the road soon.

Mr. Ali Baba explained that the ambulance was back on the road after the accident, but it has again developed a fault that needs to be replaced with new spare parts.

He also explained that the region has been zoned into three sectors so that the ambulance can rely on each other for service if one is not available. He also urged the assemblies to be part of the maintenance of the ambulances.
