Afrikids Ghana, a child rights organisation, has presented a start up token of GHC250 to about 263 girls who received a 3-month vocational training in pastries, makeup artistry and soap making.

The beneficiaries who are mostly out-of-school girls, aged between 15 and 19 years are selected from nine communities in the Tolon and Kumbungu districts of the Northern Region. The money is to aid the beneficiaries to purchase basic items and materials to kick start their livelihood careers. At a short meeting in Tolon, the token was received amidst joy, excitement and gratitude from the girls, their family members as well as the entire community.

The one-year training programme was in partnership with World Education Incorporated through the Strategic Approaches to Girls Education, STAGE, Project with funding from Foreign Commonwealth Development Office under the Girls Education Challenge Project Window. The project seeks to empower girls to improve their livelihoods and reduce barriers that hinder their development.

The STAGE project began in 2018 to curb girls’ barriers to education and other life opportunities by providing formal and informal education. Afrikids Ghana, a Child Right organization, is implementing the project as one of the DownStream Partners in FIVE districts in the Northern region namely Tolon, Kumbungu, Saboba, Bunkprugu and Mamprugu-Moagduri. The project works to keep more than 17 thousand out-of-school girls who are highly vulnerable to early marriage and teenage pregnancy, safe and engaged in learning.

The District Supervisor for NFT2 Programme, Asumah Mohammed Jina, advised the beneficiaries to make good use of the money to better their lot. He also urged parents and guardians of the girls as well as the communities to support them to excel in their chosen trades.

Some of the beneficiaries who spoke with GBC News expressed gratitude to the organizers for the opportunity to live meaningful lives.
