Residents in Tumu have taken it upon themselves, to fix parts of the Tumu-Bolgatanga Highway in the Sissala East Municipality of the Upper West Region. The residents say they cannot continue to sit aloof while government neglects their calls for extensive construction work to be undertaken on the road.

The residents took to the road in their numbers with equipment to try to fill the potholes on parts of the Highway. Leader of the community members undertaking the communal labour, Mustapha Abdul-Razak, speaking to A1 Radio said the move is to remedy the situation temporarily while they continue to appeal to government to turn its attention to their needs.

“The KANSEC [Kanton Senior High School] and [Tumu] Midwifery [Training College] has been very bad for some time now and we have been relying on the government to do something for us. Upon second thoughts, we realized that we have to do something to help ourselves. We are doing this for our own good while we wait for government to come and fix it for us,” he explained.

Resources for the project, according Mr. Abdul-Razak, have been donated by well-meaning individuals from the community including the MCE for the area, Mr. Fuseini Batong.

“We solicit for funds. We talk to tipper [truck] owners and they give us their trucks then we buy the fuel and pay the loading boys to fill the truck up for us,” he explained.

Meanwhile, he has asked for continued support to enable the residents work on a good part of the road.
