UE: We’ve addressed ‘Service Charge’ related concerns – VRA/NEDCO

The Volta River Authority / Northern Electricity Distribution Company (VRA/NEDCO) has promised residents in the Upper East Region to expect a regularisation of ‘unexpected’ charges on their power purchases. The company said its attention had been drawn to several complaints about what was described as ‘arbitrary’ by consumers. It stated it was working assiduously to address the concerns.

Speaking on Reporters’ Visit, the Bills and Revenue Protection Officer at VRA/NEDCO Engineer William Kwame Asare explained that the ‘Service Charge’ is not a new thing. “These service charges and levies are not entirely new. They have always been part of the tariff. If you pick the postpaid bill, you will find the Service Charge, National Electrification Levy, Public Lightning Levy and all other charges,” he explained.

Engineer Asare continued to say that with the introduction of the new meters, the consumer is able to “know exactly how much the customer has consumed for thirty days. It is not an assumption. It is exact. We are able to determine that from the first day of the month to the last day of the month how much power you have consumed. It is only after knowing what you have consumed that we can know how much you have to pay”.

Engineer Asare continued to explain that the problem was exacerbated because between July and October, the Point of Sale (POS) devices of the third-party vendors could not identify the charges thus consumers did not get charged the levies and taxes on the power they consumed. He said after rectifying the problem, consumers have had to pay accumulated charges.

He explained that for residential customers, the charges include National Electrification Levy which makes up 2 percent of total consumption for the month while the Street Light Levy is 3 percent of total consumption. Others are a Service Charge of 7.55 ghc for consumers using above 50kilowatts of power every 30 days and 2.13 ghc for consumers who are considered ‘lifeline’. The rest are VAT of 12.5 percent, the GETFund Levy and NHIS Levy.

The Bills and Revenue Protection Officer at VRA/NEDCO Engineer William Kwame Asare said the problem has been identified and resolved. He added that consumers can also buy power through the mobile money system from the comfort of their home.
