The District Chief Executive for the Kassena Nankana West District in the Upper East Region, Gerald Ataogye has called on the youth in the District to take advantage of the government’s programme Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ) instead of travelling to the southern part of the country for non existent white-collar jobs.
Addressing participants on the 37th National Farmers’ Day celebration at the Kajelo Junior High School park on the theme ‘ Planting for Food and Jobs, consolidating food system in Ghana’, the DCE implored young people to go into agribusiness because travelling to other parts of the country will not guarantee their success in securing jobs.
He said “… with the numerous interventions by government, the onus lies on our gallant farmers as well as all actors in the agricultural value chain to take advantage of the intervention to increase productivity for food security and increased income. It is my humble appeal to the youth to take advantage of the agricultural sector programmes and stop travelling to the southern part of the country to look for non-existent jobs”.
Mr. Augustine Abadeemtea from Chiana – Nyagania was adjudged the Best District Farmer. He was given a tricycle, bags of fertilizer, insecticide spray, knapsack, Wellington boots, a certificate and other souvenirs.
Other awards given included Best Vegetable Farmer, Best Organic Farmer, Best Sheanut Picker, Best Soyabean Farmer, Promising Young Farmer amongst others.
The award winners expressed gratitude to the government for recognizing their contribution to the growth of the country. They have therefore promised to work hard to increase their productivity.
