Bolgatanga East seeks institutional support to improve agribusiness as maize production dips

The Department of Agriculture in the Bolgatanga East district of the Upper East Region has revealed that maize production for the year has dipped from 4,686.66 Mt/Ha in 2020 to 4, 672.85 Mt/Ha in 2021, a decline of 13. 81 Mt/Ha.

The situation, the Director of the Department, Mohammed Bukari says needs institutional collaboration as well as educational measures to empower enterprising farmers.

Mr Bukari who made this known in Zuarungu on the Farmers’ Day Celebration added that though the district was on course in terms of food security, efforts such as advanced agricultural technology ought to be introduced to the farmers.

Touching on the data, he said the traditional millet has seen some increase in production of 3240.24 Mt/Ha in 2021 as compared to 167.58 Mt/Ha in 2020, an increase of 3,072.66 Mt/Ha.

Likewise, sorghum has also seen a tremendous production increase of 4, 646.46 Mt/Ha in 2021 as compared to 4,485 Mt/Ha in 2020, he added.

This year’s 37th farmers’ day celebration was under the theme “Planting for Food and Jobs-Consolidating Food Systems in Ghana.”

Kwabena Azubire was adjudged the District Best Farmer and took home a tricycle and other gifts.

Mr Azubire however seized the opportunity to encourage young people to see farming as a business as that could be the way to achieving their high heights.

Others adjudging farmers were also received, motorbikes, water canes, donkeys, cutlasses, and other farming tools.
