Consider location, market availability before investing in farms – Journo to prospective farmers

Prospective farmers are being encouraged to make necessary considerations about locations and types of animals or crops and their commercial viability before investing funds into the area. This will ensure that interested persons do not incur unnecessary losses at the start of their business.

Speaking to Samuel Mbura on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East Show, Climate Scientist and Journalist Mohammed Nurudeen explained that while farming is an incredibly lucrative venture, prospective farmers need to understand the nature of the business, consider competing interests and businesses, identify business-friendly locations and ensure that there is sufficient demand for the said product.

“People are not considering several factors before going into farming. They go into it [farming] and there would not be any ready market for them. Then, they will start complaining. We have always said that, if you want to go into farming, identify a particular location that will help you,” he explained.

He also warned that if there is an over-saturation of a particular agricultural commodity, there are chances that new entrants may begin to incur losses on their investments. Mr. Nurudeen called on the government to invest in constructing roads in farming communities to help in the transportation of farm produce from farms to market centres.

Citing India and other countries as examples, Mr. Nurudeen explained that governments in those countries had shown deliberate commitment to expanding road infrastructure and this had positively affected the fortunes of farmers in the area.

On the celebration of the National Farmers’ Day, Mr. Nurudeen commended the government for awarding farmers but called for expanded sponsorship to ensure that more farmers are recognized for the work they do.
