Police in the Northern Region arrested six persons at Aboabo, a suburb of Tamale for obstructing traffic.

The six blocked the Tamale central-Abedi Pele roundabout road as part of the sit-down strike embarked by the Coalition of Commercial Transport Operators across the country. Though the strike was called off two hours into the industrial action, some operators defied the directives from their executives, blocked roads and prevented other commuters from operating.

The Industrial Relations Officer of the GPRTU of TUC in the Northern Region, Alhaji Abubakari Alhassan Chandiiba told GBC News in a telephone interview that, the strike was off, adding that, they were waiting for further instructions from their national executives after a meeting with the Ministry of Transport.

At the Bus Stop Terminal in Tamale, passengers who were earlier stranded were seen boarding vehicles to their destinations.

The Union Secretary for the Tamale-Kumasi station, Alhaji Ahmed Yussif confirmed that they have been asked to call off the strike, but noted that the reason for the directive is yet to be communicated to the union.

The streets of Tamale were unusually quiet for the morning and some residents including school children were seen walking to their destination. The socio-economic impact of strike action in the Northern region could greatly affect Traders who usually carry perishable agricultural produce down south for sale.

Watermelon, pepper and tomatoes are among the products often transported outside of the region. In the regional capital, most residents have motorbikes that are used for internal transportation.
