The Upper East Regional Director of the Center for National Culture in the Madam Elizabeth Adongo has asked parents to use the festive season and its accompanying holidays as an opportunity to educate their children on their culture.

According to Madam Adongo, culture plays a significant role in children’s development hence parents owe it a duty to impart such knowledge to their children.

Speaking at the maiden Regional Festival of the Nine Lessons and Carols in Bolgatanga, Madam noted that the majority of parents are still doing little in educating their children about their culture.

She said most children between the ages of eight and nineteen when asked about their culture usually fail to demonstrate any proper knowledge in the area.

“Sometimes it is sad to see children who are supposed to know their culture and use it to their advantage are rather indifferent and will be talking about Western culture. Just look around in the region, 1 out of 10 girls only know how to wear their traditional cloth. Today’s children are now busy wearing jeans and other things that do not help in promoting our culture. We need to change our attitude and how we see our culture. Our culture is who we are, and we ought to embrace it for growth. So, I’m encouraging parents to start teaching their children their local languages and how to wear their traditional clothes and cook the local dishes.”

If followed properly, she noted will help keep and enrich the indigenous history of the region. Adding that her outfit is also doing its best to sensitize children and parents at various districts and schools on how they can keep track of their culture.
