Some residents within the Bolgatanga Municipality of the Upper East Region have chided Members of Parliament on the repugnant scenes that characterised parliamentary proceedings on Monday, December 20, 2021.

In a random interview with A1 News, the residents reminded the Parliamentarians that they were voted for to go and debate on issues that will inure to the benefits of the citizenry and not engage in brawls.

They have thus appealed to the Legislators to channel their energies into developing the country.

“We don’t vote for them to go and fight; we just vote for them to go and develop the country. So, we are begging, the country is coming down. So, they should look at better things like roads and develop the country”, said Mr. Tanko, one of the residents.

Another resident who spoke on the basis of anonymity described the incident as ‘ unfortunate and added that it erodes the hard-earned reputation of the country as the beacon of democracy in sub- Saharan Africa.

“It is very bad. Ghana that has been touted as the beacon of democracy should not be doing this parliament. Every person in Ghana is looking up to the parliamentarians as lawmakers and people who will actually make good decisions and laws so that the country will be to move smoothly but if this thing is happening: fighting among ourselves as if we are in the Jungle, I don’t think it’s helping us. So what happened in parliament is unfortunate and it doesn’t have to repeat itself.” He stated.
On Monday, December 20, 2021, members of both minority and majority caucuses engaged in a melee during deliberations on the controversial E-Levy Bill.

According to reports, the scuffle ensued after the First Deputy Speaker Joseph Osei Owusu expressed his interest in voting on whether or not the E-Levy Bill should be considered under a certificate of urgency.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday morning, Leadership of the House apologized to Ghanaians for the unfortunate incident.

The house was adjourned on Tuesday, December 21, 2022. It agreed to reconvene on 18th January, 2022 where they are expected to resume discussions on the E-Levy.
