Traders in Bolgatanga unhappy about low patronage ahead of Christmas

With barely a day away from Christmas some traders at the Bolgatanga central market have expressed worry over the slow pace of patronage of their wares.

According to them, they are yet to experience the ‘Christmas fever’ because their products, ranging from rice, tomato paste, meat and others are not being purchased as compared to the same period last year.

They stated that last year by this time sales were up as compared to this year.

The traders spoke to A1 News.

“The market as it is now, is not like first. This is an instance where you will have many people especially we the market people just sitting down having no one to come and buy the things. When they come, they buy just a few and go. So the market is not very good like last year where we had many people coming to buy. We are not even in the Christmas but the market is not just there; the people are not coming to buy. Everyone is complaining that the market is not good; it is like it’s everywhere. Just turn and look round. Haven’t you seen the way we are sitting? There is no market; it is only we the traders who are sitting here, with no one coming to patronize our goods.” a trader who gave her name as Charity lamented.

“The market is not just good at all. The people do not come to the market, let alone patronize our products. So we are just praying for good health and long life. In fact, last year was better than this year. This year, they don’t purchase anything at all. It’s only wind that has taken over the whole market, dirtying our meat and no one is purchasing anything”. a meat vendor fumed.

Madam Gifty Atia, an oil vendor said “the situation is the oil keeps on increasing; now oil doesn’t have two cedis unless three cedis. If you enter this market with ten cedis, you can’t prepare food. So that’s Ghana for us. The market is just slow and things are increasing”.

A clothes dealer said, “we are suffering. Christmas is approaching but no one comes to purchase anything. There is no market and it’s like that everywhere. Last year was better than this year”.
