The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has described as hypocritical the ease to which the Bureau for National Investigations (BNI) arrested a staunch member of the party over a doctored photo of President John Mahama.

Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie said in as much as he abhors the circulation of such frivolous photos of the president, the bureau must be professional and responsible in handling matters of that nature and desist from creating an erroneous impression in the minds of Ghanaians.

Michael Omari Wadie, NPP constituency Chairman was arrested by the BNI at the Kotoka International Airport on Monday for allegedly circulating doctored nude pictures of President Mahama on Facebook.

The BNI is still investigating if he is the originator of the photo which has President Mahama’s face transposed on that of a man in the picture who was caught having sex with a woman in an office.

But Omari Wadie has been granted bail pending investigations.

Commenting on the issue on Asempa FM’s Ekosii sen programme Tuesday, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie contended that the BNI is being ‘remote controlled’ by the governing party, National Democratic Congress (NDC).

He questioned why the arrest of Wadie was only made when some members of the party held a press conference calling on the security agency to intervene.

Sir John, as he is popularly known, wondered why the BNI did not cause any arrest when similar pictures of the NPP flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo was all over on the same social media platform.

“BNI is acting as if there are two separate laws in Ghana; one for the NDC and one for the NPP. Equal rights and justice must prevail in this country to ensure peace” he said.

The NPP scribe was of the opinion that the issue has been blown out of proportion because President Mahama is involved. Nothing, he contended has been done to those who also doctored pictures of Akufo Addo just to disgrace him.

Sir John expressed disappointment about how the BNI has given credence to this ‘petty issue’ when security has broken down in the Ashanti region.

He said the BNI, by their conduct, has painted a gloomy picture about itself; a situation he is sure would be detrimental to their operations in future.
