Few weeks after the Upper West Regional Blood Bank hinted of a shortage of blood in storage, the Ghana Red Cross Society (GRCS) together with the Health Ambassadors, a non-profit organisation based in Wa, has organised a blood donation exercise.

The exercise was to shore up the quantity of blood available for use in emergency cases. Speaking to A1 Radio in Wa, the Upper West Regional Capital, the Regional Manager of the GRCS Jeremiah Kwaku Afako explained that information reached his office that the Wa Municipal Hospital had run out of blood and had to rely on its sister-hospital in Jirapa for the supply of same.

To help prevent a recurrence of the situation, the GRCS partnered with Health Ambassadors to collect some blood from donors. The exercise which took place at the Wa Municipal Hospital, yesterday, January 8, 2022 was used to collect some 52 pints of blood.

While the target may not have been reached, Mr. Afako believes that the total amount collected will still help save lives. He said it is essential that the Society associates itself with similar programmes to help save lives.

“Knowing how essential blood is to humanity, and the human body we had to partner to avert a potential blood shortage in the region,” he said.

Mr. Afako encouraged the voluntary donation of blood to help save lives.
