The Upper East Regional Coordinator of the Mental Health Unit Edem Quarshie Ameglah has called on the public to avoid the abuse of alcohol and other psychoactive substances. Mr. Ameglah explained that “the best form of treatment for substance abuse is prevention”.
He made these comments when he spoke to Samuel Mbura on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East on the back of earlier media reports that suggested that some 49 people in the Bongo District of the Upper East Region had developed various degrees of mental health disorders from the use of alcohol.
The Regional Coordinator of the Mental Health Unit explained that there is a direct link between the abuse of alcohol and mental health disorders. “Alcohol has a role when it comes to mental health issues. Depending on the quantity that a person takes, one could suffer from some mental health illness. So there is a link to some types of mental health conditions,” he explained.
He said the abuse of alcohol would lead to an addiction. “When it gets to a certain point, you will have to increase the amount to take if not you will not get the satisfaction from it. It can become the master of your life,” he said.
Mr. Ameglah called on the public to visit the various District or Municipal for assistance and care for any mental health disorders or challenges.
