Electorates Defy Heavy Downpour To Exercise Their Franchise In Assembly Elections

Electorates in the Upper East Region defied the heavy downpour to come out to vote in the ongoing District level elections.

The election which was expected to start at exactly 7:00 am had a late start in various electoral areas in the Upper East Region due to late reporting of presiding officers and some administrative constraints A1 Radio’s James Adombire reported.

Elections were ongoing regardless of the rains which started around 10:00 am. Adombire added that voters came out with raincoats and umbrellas to exercise their franchise.

Turnout at the various electoral areas according him is overwhelming and encouraging considering how long the rains took before it subsided.

Some aspiring Assemblymen/women according to him transported some of the electorates from their residents to the polling station in their vehicles to facilitate the voting process.

He reports that the electoral process has generally been peaceful but for a few problems in some electoral areas. He added that although there were few instances where the biometric machine rejected some individuals, officials of the electoral commission made them wash their hands and were verified when they tried later.

Elections took place in a total of 330 electoral areas in the Upper East region to select Assemblymen/women to represent the people at the district level whiles 191electoral areas selected Unit committee members.
