Francis Ennor, the Upper East Regional Director, Department of Agriculture has admitted to sharp increases in the prices of fertilizers on the open market. Mr. Ennor however explained that the increases in the prices could be directly attributed to the global prices in prices of commodities and services.

“As you know, globally, prices are soaring almost every week. That is what is affecting the fertilizer industry. The prices keep on increasing every week. That is the most unfortunate thing that we have to face every day,” he said.

He said this when he spoke on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East today, January 31, 2022.

Mr. Ennor said until prices of fertilizers on the foreign markets stabilize or reduce, local prices would continue to see periodic upward adjustments. He was quick to add that plans are far advanced for Ghana to begin the production of fertilizers this year. This would mean that farmers could have cheaper options of fertilizers for use on their farms.

“OCP in partnership with government of Ghana is making sure to produce some of the quantity requirement that Ghana needs. Hopefully, it will come on board and cushion the situation on board for us,” he said.

The Regional Director of Agriculture was confident that in the coming season, farmers would be able to access fertilizers freely unlike in the previous season where fertilizers run short sometime during the year.

The high unusually high price of the product notwithstanding, it was not readily available on the market.
