Bolga: 6 students get scholarship to pursue engineering courses at University of Mines

Six students from five communities in the Bolgatanga Municipality have gained scholarships from the Minister of Education with funding from Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation company (BOST) to study 4-years Bachelor of Science Engineering courses at the University of Mines and Technology, Tarkwa.

Freda Nsohoika from Pobaga, Maxwell Akumbuliya from Sumburugu, Freda Abugre Adumpobila from Zuarungu, Asakidisko Klinsmann from Tanzui and Akagane Isaac Akolgo from Yorogo were selected from among many students in the Upper East Region through a rigorous process to go and study Mechanical engineering, Computer Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Civil engineering.

This Scholarship package is the brainchild of the minister of Education, Dr Yaw Adutsum to help needy but brilliant students across the country with funding support from Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation.(BOST) Company LTD. The Comprehensive scholarship package covers all academic fees, hostel and feeding, a laptop computer and allowance to support their stay on campus for the next four years.

At a brief ceremony to offer the four Bachelor of Science in Engineering scholarships to the six students at the forecourt of the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly, the Head of Cooperate Affairs and Personal Assistant of the Minister of Education in charge of the program, Col. Kwesi Abankwa said 50 brilliant but needy students across the country will benefit from the initiative. Five students each from BOST impacted areas (where their pipeline passes through).

Mr. Abankwa explained the scholarship package ” today has seen six youth from Bolgatanga Municipality most especially the communities where BOST has their pipeline passing through to pursue various degrees in Engineering by the initiative of the minister of Education. These six candidates here are the fortunate ones after proper scrutiny, has been selected to enjoy this offer. These children, for the next four years, their school fees are going to be paid for at the University of Mines – Tarkwa. Again we are going to pay for their accommodation fees and provide laptops for these beneficiaries”.

He added that the program is targeting 2000 students. ” The program is targeting 2000 people but first we are doing 50 under the sponsorship of BOST”.

In the Upper East Region, 10 students from two districts benefited, 4 from Talensi District and 6 from Bolgatanga Municipal.

The Public Relations Officer of the Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation company (BOST) Nathaniel Acheampong said it is part of their corporate social responsibility to support people academically to bridge the literacy and illiteracy gap in the country.

He said “we accepted to provide funding because of three reasons. BOST is an engineering company, when you finish your course, the chances are that you can come and work for the company. As part of our cooperate social responsibility, our number one priority is education. We have been assisting schools with learning materials. The final reason is that as cooperate citizens we must also contribute to lifting the economic prosperity in areas that we operate”.

Beneficiaries of the scholarship package expressed their excitement and promised to put up their best to ensure that the efforts of the education minister are not wasted.

Meanwhile, parents and guardians present were overwhelmed with the juicy package their wards are going to enjoy. They have therefore expressed their gratitude to the Minister of Education, BOST, Bolga Municipal Assembly and the MCE of Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly for the offer.

The ceremony was attended by the Public Relations Officer of BOST, Head of Cooperate Affairs at the Ministry of Education, Bolga Municipal Chief Executive, Municipal Director of Education, Upper East BOST depot Manager and staff, Some traditional leaders, parents of Beneficiary students, Presiding member and some Assembly members of Bolgatanga Municipal members of media among others.
