The menace of child streetism continues to abound in the Upper East Region. It has become relatively common to be heckled at traffic stops or at lorry stations by children, often of foreign descent, in their attempt to take some monies from commuters and passersby.

Georgina Aberese-Ako, the Acting Upper East Regional Director of the Department of Children, speaking on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East explained that the situation is of concern to the Department but all strategies to rid the streets of the children have proved futile.

Madam Aberese-Ako expressed worry about the health and safety of the children engaged in the activity saying “at that age, they are supposed to be at school. Their parents are sitting somewhere while they are under the hot sun begging to make ends meet.

She said even of greater concern is that some adults contract these children to ‘work’ for them for a percentage of the monies they make begging.

Other Stories:

The Acting Upper East Regional Director of the Department of Children said the attention of the Upper East Regional Coordinating Council has been drawn to this to complement the efforts of government and non-governmental agencies already helping to fight against the menace.
