UW: Anacetus Banakoma adjudged Regional Mental Health nurse of the year; commended for immense role in mental health rehabilitation

The Daffiama-Bussie-Issa (DBI) Mental Health Focal Person, Anacetus Banakoma has been adjudged the Best Upper West Regional Mental Health Nurse by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA).

He was presented with a citation of honour. Mr. Banakoma was extolled for being a team player and going beyond the call of service to ensure that people with mental health challenges within DBI are properly catered for.

“Though regulated by the Allied Health Professional Council, you have not abandoned your roots. You imbibed nursing in the provision of exemplary, quality, accessible, affordable, health care. There are testimonies of your extensive knowledge, innovations and exemplary leadership, in the delivery of individual/groups care in the Daffiama- Bussie-Issa district where you work. You are best described as team player, community mobiliser, client advocate, private sector Collaborator, especially with the NGO world. You are self-motivated, client-centred, result-oriented and works with little or no supervision. Your superiors admire your assertiveness in communication, innovation, adaptability. learnability, among others. Your unique skills at using community resources to rehabilitate the mentally challenge, is still a puzzle,” portions of the citation read.

The GRNMA continued to say “you have in many instances put in strategic interventions with collaborators to obtain a win-win outcome. For instance, you successfully integrated many of your clients on rehabilitation with the livelihood empowerment programme, so as to prevent relapse. Many NGOs in Mental health are currently operating in DBI by your singular intervention. In view of this, the GRNMA-UWR, has found you to be amazing and deserving of recognition as the best practising mental health nurse in the Upper West Region for 2021. Accept our congratulations”.

Speaking to A1 Radio, Mr. Banakoman said “Aside from my father God Almighty who superseded everything, I would say I Kept very good company with every person I come in contact with and made very good use of every little piece of information that comes my way no matter how slim or difficult the processes might be. So far as I am eligible and the information would add up to my committed agenda, I gave a very good run for it and finally succeeded”.

He called for media support to help change the negative narrative and perceptions surrounding persons with some mental health challenges.
