Pockets of agitations over access to nomination forms in parts of the Northern Region; particularly Nantong, Yendi and Tolon Constituencies have caught the attention of the Regional Executives of the New Patriotic Party. The Executives have thus initiated processes, to get the bottom of the issues, meet the aggrieved persons and ensure that peace reigns during the entire process of electing Polling Station Executives.

Speaking on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East about media reports that suggested that some members of the NPP in the aforementioned areas of the Northern Region were unhappy about the processes initiated to elect Polling Station executives, the Deputy Regional Communications Officer of the NPP, Mohammed Ibrahim Sherrif said the issues may have arisen because of the misrepresentation of what the party constitution.

Using the disturbances as an example, Mr. Sherrif explained that the Constituency Executives of the Tolon Constituency were unhappy because of the Regional Executive Committee Member who had been sent to the area to oversee the elections. He explained that per the party’s constitution, the Constituency had no right to decide which Regional Executive would be chosen to oversee the elections in the area.

Mr. Sherrif reminded Constituency Executives that it was not in their place to decide for the Constituency, who their Polling Station Executives should be.

“In the case of Yendi, I have heard the Constituency Chairman say that they have met and have decided to retain all current executives at the Polling Stations. With the greatest of respect, that is not what the party constitution says. So these are some of the issues that are causing some of the grievances that you are hearing,” he said.

He said under no condition should people be disallowed to contest because Constituency Executives had decided that a certain crop of executives should be retained or rather, contest unopposed. Mr. Sherrif was quick to add that should all party members at the polling stations eligible to vote, decide that some executives should be retained or rather, contest unopposed, that is acceptsable.

The Deputy Regional Communications Director of the NPP said while the attention of the authorities had been drawn to the many issues and were working to address same, it would serve both the party and the personalities involved well if they remain calm and channel their concerns through the proper channels.
