Dr. Jonas Bugase, the UTAG branch President of the C.K. Tedam University for Technology and Applied Sciences (CKT-UTAS) has said in tandem with the directives from the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), lecturers at CKT-UTAS are to return to the classrooms today, February 28, 2022.

Speaking on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East, Dr. Bugase explained that while the University’s local UTAG branch may have voted against the suspension of the strike, it would respect the NEC’s directive to return to the classroom while the ratification of the collated responses from the various universities goes on.

“In fact, I am on my way to a lecture. This stems from the fact that the NEC has suspended the strike pending subsequent ratification by members,” he said.

It would be recalled that the CKT-UTAS branch of UTAG voted that the strike should continue. A voting scheme organised by the members of the school had 64 per cent of members agreeing that the strike should continue until the government provides the necessary agreement while 35 per cent agreed to the suspension of the strike and with one undecided voter.

He said after the collation of the results is done, NEC would then take a decision whether to continue with the suspension of the strike or rather, a resumption of the strike based on the results that have been collected from 15 public universities where UTAG exists.

Dr. Bugase was hopeful that the period, while the strike has been suspended, would provide the government with a prime opportunity to meet the demands of the lecturers.

He said on March 9, 2022, the court is expected to rule on the substantive issue before it.
