The Upper East Regional Command of the Ghana Police Service has said has expressed worry that residents continue to deliberately engage in the trade of stolen motorbikes. The Police said once there is a huge market for cheap stolen motorbikes, the perpetrators would always be willing to continue with their criminal activities.

Speaking on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East, the Public Affairs Officer of the Upper East Regional Police Command, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), David Fianko-Okyere said recently, the Ghana Police Service has had to buy an end-user of the stolen-motorbike trade as a means to discourage residents from purchasing stolen goods.

“Motorbike theft is our top crime. That is because there is a motivation for these criminals. When they snatch the motorbikes from their owners, there is a group of people who have made themselves recipients [of the stolen motorbikes] at a lower cost. If you check the crime situation in the region, motorbike snatching is the one on the increase,” he said.

He continued to say that “the last arrest that we made, we even had to arrest one of the dishonest receivers. He was sent to court and has been remanded. so we are waiting for the outcome”.
