Dr. Samuel Atintono, President of Bolga, Nabdam, Bongo and Tongo (BONABOTO) Association is convinced that the brouhaha surrounding the location of the airport for the Upper East Region has finally been put to rest. Dr. Atintono explained that there are clear indications that the Airport would be located at Sumbrungu, the originally suggested location for the facility.

He said this when he spoke on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East.

“From us in BONABOTO, we have been making follow-ups, interacting with people or authorities that are concerned to ensure that we have an airport in the Upper East Region. Sometime in 2020, the chiefs of the BONABOTO area led by the Tongo-Rana went to the Presidency with a number of things, of which the Airport was one of the critical issues that they discussed. We have still been following up on those issues”.

“There were some issues as to where it should be. I think where we are now, we are convinced that it will be in Sumbrungu. [This is] from our informal checks with authorities concerned,” he said.

Dr. Atintono went on to commend the Upper East Regional Minister, Stephen Yakubu for his enthusiasm and support in ensuring that the Upper East Region gets its own airport.

He continued to say while the issue of location may have been sorted, the challenges with regard to the funding of the project also remains a huge problem. He said some preliminary work had been done at the Sumbrungu location, once funding of the project is figured out, the work that has begun would continue.

The President of BONABOTO said while he is unable to say exactly when funds would be acquired for the project to continue, residents should be rest assured that the project would see the light of day.
