Seven new market-driven programmes have been introduced by the Bolgatanga Technical University (BTU) in the Upper East Region. They include; Bachelor of Technology in Procurement and Supply Chain Management, Diploma in Construction Estimation and Measurement, Diploma in Electrical and Electronic Engineer, Diploma in Construction Engineering, Diploma in Garment Construction, Diploma in Network Technology and Diploma in Computer Science.

The programmes that have commenced in the 2021/2022 academic year are expected to broaden the academic sphere and enhance the current status and relevance of the university.

Professor Samuel Erasmus Alnaa, Vice-Chancellor of the Bolgatanga Technical University made this known during the 19th matriculation ceremony of BTU and the 2nd matriculation ceremony since it become a technical university.

The new status of the university and the introduction of new programs has contributed to an increase in enrollment with 802 freshmen and women were admitted for various programs of study this academic year as against 696 students who were admitted in the last academic year. This represented a 13.2 percent increment in enrollment.

Prof. Alnaa revealed the University’s plans to introduce master’s degree programs in the areas of technology.

“This will consolidate our ambition to become a preferred tertiary institution and a technology village”, he added.

Despite these enviable achievements, BTU is still faced with an infrastructural deficit which he said affects the smooth progress of academic activities.

“Paramount among our challenges is infrastructure which is contingent for the smooth running of every academic institution, especially now that we have introduced many new programs and with the rise of student numbers. This, therefore, calls for more infrastructure in the areas of lecture theatre and accommodation for students to among other things mitigate issues of overcrowding.”

In order to continue to impact the requisite knowledge on its students, the Vice-Chancellor made mentioned that the university continues to offer capacity-building opportunities for its staff through the award of study leave.

“The University has also financially supported staff participation in both local and international workshops and seminars to further improve staff capacity and knowledge for better administrative practices, research, teaching, and learning.”

Prof. Alnaa admonished the freshmen and women to inculcate the habit of honesty, integrity, and be devoid of dishonest behaviours such as examination malpractice which could jeopardize their future.
