Organisers of the Upper East Regional celebration of the 65th Independence Day have received some commendation from the public for obeying its time as advertised.

The programme was scheduled to take place at 6:30 am and A1 Radio can report that a few minutes after the stated time, all the contingents drawn from all the security services and students from selected schools within the Kassena Nankana Municipality were set for inspection.

The inspection of the parade, march pass, reading of speeches and handing over of awards were all done in the space of three hours.

Over the years, pupils were lined up in the scorching sun for long hours. This led to pupils collapsing. However, learning from past experience, organizers of this year’s Independence Day Parade kept to their time making sure that pupils did not stand for long hours.

At about 10:15 am, the closing prayers were said and pupils were dispersed to their various homes.

The Presbyterian Model primary school won the first position in the Primary School category, St Paul’s primary school and Saboro Primary won the second and third position respectively. They were given sets of jerseys, footballs, trophies, wall clocks and certificates.

This year’s Independence Day Celebration was under the theme “working together, bouncing back better”.

Speakers from Togo and Burkina Faso who took tends to address congregants at the C.O.S Park in Navrongo called for unity amongst citizens, acknowledging that there are global challenges the world is faced with.

The Upper East Regional Minister, Stephen Yakubu who was the special guest of honour said the independence day celebration is a day set aside every year to honour and commemorate the lives and efforts of our forefathers who sacrificed their lives and resources to gain freedom from British rule.

He said “our biggest challenge as a people is poverty and the situation is further worsened by large scale indiscipline in all sections of our society. In this crusade parents, teachers, and all stakeholders have vital role to play in spreading the message of honesty, tolerance, peace and harmony. Our teachers and elders must not only be preaching these virtues but must be seen to practice them and be role models for communities and our children to emulate.”
