UE: Tono Water Project comes online; uninterrupted water supply to Bolga, Navrongo, Bawku until 2040 – GWCL

Commercial entities and private homes within the Bolgatanga Municipality and Bawku Municipalities as well as those within the Navrongo zone of the Kassena Nankana Municipality have been assured of a continuous flow of water up until 2040, all things being equal.

This is because the Tono Water Project has been completed and is online thus serving customers within the aforementioned areas.

The water project at the Tono Dam is managed by the Ghana Water Company Limited. To ensure that more homes and businesses within the areas

“Government has been able to secure money to construct a new treatment plant situated at Tono. This treatment plant would be able to produce 20,500m3 of water per day.  This water that is there is supposed to serve the customer even up to 2040. It is a large volume of water available to serve residents within these catchment areas”.

“With the availability of this water, we think that access now, to water would be easy”.

This came to light when the Upper East Regional Manager of the Ghana Water Company (GWCL), Hanson Mensah Akutteh spoke to the media today, Thursday, March 10, 2022. This was after a closed-door meeting with the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) in Bolgatanga, the Upper East Regional Capital.

Mr. Akutteh said the GWCL is working to expand its coverage to be able to reach more customers. 20 kilometres of pipes have been laid to help with the expansion of coverage. This would mean additional 4,800 households would be added to the already existing system.

Also, Mr. Akutteh reiterated the Company’s commitment to addressing all the concerns and complaints by its customers.

The PURC, led by its Executive Secretary Dr. Ishmeal Ackah, was in the region on a day’s working visit. Dr. Ackah first interacted with the staff of the newly opened Regional Office of the PURC. He then visited the GWCL to have an extensive discussion about the company’s activities in the region; the successes, the challenges and the complaints that have been received by PURC.

Dr. Ackah commended the GWCL for its strong presence in the region. He said the concerns that had been raised by the consumers of water from the GWCL had been forwarded to the company. He was optimistic that the challenges would be swiftly dealt with.

He assured customers that the PURC would continue to ensure that customers are able to access water for their homes and businesses as well as make complaints with relative ease.
