The Bolgatanga Municipal Chief Executive, Rex Asanga says education remains a priority in his administration and the Municipal Assembly is doing all it can to equip schools with the needed Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Laboratories to enhance teaching and learning of the subject in the various schools of the municipality.

His comments are on the back of a recent report done by North Bridge ICT initiative of Norgence IT solutions in the Upper East Region which revealed that only 2 out of every 10 schools in the Municipality have ICT facilities in their schools.

Schools that have no ICT laboratories or instructors use the learning period to “gossip or loiter around”.

Admitting to the findings of the report, Mr. Asanga explained that, it could not be far from right as the Municipality has had many challenges in getting fully functional ICT facilities for schools in the Municipality but despite the challenges, his outfit is tirelessly working to make sure the issue is remedied in due time.

The Chief Executive who spoke DayBreak Upper East show on A1 Radio noted that, ICT remains a pivot on which government would accelerate its digitization drive so it will only be right that students or pupils are well equipped in the knowledge of ICT.

He stated that “well I don’t have all the statistics but I think it might be true because schools that have ICT Laboratories are not that many”.

“We are aware of the problem not many schools have ICT labs or even computers” he stressed.

Answering the question on what his outfit his doing, he added that, “well you know in the educational sector, we have huge challenges. Furniture is a problem and there are still schools without classrooms but ICT is really an important area. Because we have limited resources, we are collaborating and try to encourage some NGOs to take up that and assist the schools, so we are currently working on that”.

He went further to appeal for support from stakeholders and partners of education to help in assisting these numerous schools who do not have ICT Laboratories to enhance teaching and learning.
