Some basic teachers in the Upper East Region have expressed with deep concern the management of the educational sector by the current administration.

The teachers say the NPP government has taken a negative deep cut on the educational sector stressing that teachers and students do not know the syllabus they are into.

Speaking on the agreed reduction of the number of teaching weeks from forty-three (43) to forty (40) for the academic year by the Ghana Education Service in consultation with the Ghana National Association of Teachers, the teachers indicated that the teaching field has lost its relevance.

“As I speak to you, we don’t know what exactly we taught these students this first term. As a teacher, I can’t pinpoint it. The educational sector is becoming someway. And the sad part is that we can’t voice as teachers. Even now that I’m speaking to you, I’m praying that God will confuse you not to record me and play on air. I’m scared”, one teacher spoke anonymously to A1 Radio.

Another teacher said, “if you take then and now, you will realize from the students’ performance that they are actually not learning anything. In those days, the PTA was active and supportive. Today, it’s a different story. Teachers used to speak openly today. Make a mistake and see where you will sleep. The government of the day has banned teachers from voicing their concerns. And if we don’t voice the challenges, how do we make good amendments.”

Another teacher said “We left with a week to vacate students per the Ghana Education Service’s calendar, but my brother, we don’t know where the exam questions are coming from. No communications, no anything. Tell us, is this how our educational systems should run? My brother a lot is happening that needs redress but hey, don’t make that mistake to speak or else they will take you to a place that you will not like to work at. My sister is a living victim of such. And the funny part was that she was a member of the party of the day yet suffered that, so I’m being careful here.”

Meanwhile, the service has asked heads and both regional and district directors to act accordingly with the new closing time for KG, Primary & JHS.
