A meeting to elect a Presiding Member for the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly has been postponed indefinitely after the demise of an assembly member.

Paul Amaliba Azika, a native of Zaare was a government appointee of the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly and a member of the New Patriotic Party.

He collapsed during the counting process of the Bolgatanga Central constituency election of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP). Sources are that the late Amaliba Azika collapsed when his choice of candidate, Awudu Asonga Moro could not secure the nod to lead the party as constituency chairman. Mr. Asonga obtained 353 votes while the elected candidate, Kwame Anaba secured 355 votes to become the next constituency chairman. The incumbent, Alhaji Alhassan Amaliba who was booted out of office managed to secure 77 votes while 7 votes were rejected.

Speaking to A1 NEWS after the postponed presiding member election, Municipal Chief Executive for Bolgatanga, Rex Asanga described the late assembly member as an intelligent person who made valid contributions during assembly discussion.

“We have just as a house postponed the meeting unanimously to a later date because of the sudden demise of one of our members because members of the house are not in the right mood for the election. Hon Paul Azika was an intelligent person who made very good contributions during debates of the house. He had friends across the political divide. He was highly respected by his colleagues. So, we will really miss his contribution to the house. It is such a sad moment that a young person like that has to respond to his maker’s call”, Mr. Asanga recounted.

The late Amaliba Azika left behind two daughters. He was a teacher at the Tongo-Beo JHS in the Talensi District of the Upper East region. His body has been deposited at the regional hospital morgue, Bolgatanga while preparation is underway for the burial in two weeks’ time.
