Chiefs calls on government to set up a relief fund for Bawku

The Upper East Regional House of Chiefs is convinced that the conflict in Bawku has reached crisis level and as such has called on the government to set up a relief fund for people in the area.

President of the House, Pe Ditundini Adiali Ayagitam III in a press briefing on Thursday, May 26, 2022 says many individuals and families have lost their source of livelihood and are currently struggling to survive.

He called on the government to appeal for various kinds of donations to alleviate the humanitarian crisis currently unfolding in the area.

“The situation in Bawku has reached crisis level, with many families and individuals having lost their source of livelihood and currently struggling to survive. We call on the government to set up a relief fund and to appeal for various kinds of donations to alleviate the humanitarian crisis currently unfolding in the area.”

The chiefs encouraged government to set up major state establishments and provide employment for the teeming youth in the area.

“For the long term, we encourage the government to consider setting up a major state establishments and providing special investment packages to provide employment for the teaming youth and give them a sense of meaning in life.”

According to the chiefs, the highest state institution and investment in Kusuag is a Senior High School which they say cries foul of the enormous contribution that the land has rendered to the state.

The chiefs also urged various tribal groups in the Kusaug Tradional Area to make a joint statement about the situation in Bawku and call the feuding factions to embrace peace.

“Bawku is the capital of the Kusaug Traditional Area, which is a home to a number of settler communities including Yanga, Hausa, Bimoba, Moshie, and Dagomba besides the Mamprusis and a host of other tribal groups from across the country. These are people belonging to one country called Ghana; desire to live in peace, tranquility and to go about their legitimate businesses like everyone in this country. We, therefore, urge them to make a joint statement about the situation in Bawku and call the feuding factions to embrace peace.”

Earlier, the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs has stated in clear terms that Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II is the legitimate Chief of Bawku by the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs.

President of the House, Pe Ditundini Adiali Ayagitam III, in a press briefing today, May 26, 2022, stated that Naba Azoka II is the ruler of the Kusaug Traditional Area and advised the Mamprusis in Bawku to select a suitable candidate amongst themselves for consideration by Naba Azoka II for enskinment as a Mamprusi community chief in Bawku.
